MASTER SCHOLARSHIP IN GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Prof. Chung Sung Gyo, Department of Civil Engineering, Dong-A university, is looking for 2 master students in geotechnical engineering for the intake of March 2014.  Key information for it is as follows:

Application period & required documents:

- Application period: from 25 Nov, 2013 to 13 Dec, 2013.

- Required documents are given in the following:

Eligibility of Application:

(1) All applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

   

- A foreign student whose parents are not citizens of Korea.

   

- Applicant has to completed at least 16 years of education (equivalent to elementary, middle,

         high,undergraduate) outside of Korea.

(2) All applicants must have one of the following language test scores: TOPIK level 3, TOEFL 400,

     CBT 97, iBT 32, TEPS 400, IELTS 3.5 or higher

(3) Program Prerequisite (Eligibility)

  

  - Master's Program: Bachelor's degree or equivalent

   

 - Doctorate Program: Master's degree or equivalent

   

 - Combined Master's and Doctorate Program (type 1): Bachelor's degree or equivalent

       

  (※ Application is available during 1st selection period only. )

  

  - Combined Master's and Doctorate Program (type 2):

       

Application for this program is only available to students enrolled in a Master's program at

        

Dong-A University Graduate School. Enrolled students who've completed 2nd semester

     

(registered for 3rd or 4th semester) can apply for the same major. (Students enrolled in a Combined Bachelor's and Master's Program cannot apply for this program.)

◎ Applicants to the combined master's and Doctorate programs are encouraged to check the

              courses offered in each departments.

- The applicants who are permitted by Prof. Chung can post the documents to: The Graduate School, Dong-A University, 37 Nakdong - Daero, 550 Beongil, Saha-gu, Busan, S. Korea. 

Background & English requirement:

-  Applicants who graduated bachelor program in civil engineering and geological engineering,

preferably in structural or geotechnical engineering.

-  Applicants should have one of the following official certificates: TEPS, TOEFL, and IELTS.

For each certificate, the minimum score required is given on the website. 

Research & support: 

-  Potential research areas: Field tests and soil characterization, Sampling techniques and

sample disturbance; Soft ground improvement; and Foundation engineering.

- Monthly salary: 800,000 KW (including tuition fee and living expense).  

Brief description on the geotechnical engineering laboratory:

We have two laboratories: soft clay engineering and foundation engineering laboratories. The first

laboratory is equipped by various advanced laboratory and field test equipments for geotechnical

and geological engineering; particularly, the most modern and robust field test equipments for

piezocone test (20-ton CPTu machine which is one of a few machines available in Korea),

Dilatometer Test (DMT), Seismic Dilatometer Test (SDMT), Pressuremeter Test (PMT), Borehole

Plate Load Test (BPLT), and Field Vane Test (FVT). Especially, this laboratory is developing

advanced fixed-piston samplers and sampling techniques to produce very high quality undisturbed

samples, and provides several devices to prove sample quality. An additional interest is ground

improvements, focusing on the prediction of field behavior, numerical analysis, monitoring, and

back-analysis.

The foundation engineering laboratory is emphasized on cost-effective pile foundations in thick

soft ground and on earthquake-resistance structures. To achieve these purposes, advanced numerical

analyses and pilot tests are carried out.
